Did you know that Tangi's own, Elmer Chocolate, is the oldest family-owned chocolate company in the United States? Established in 1855 in New Orleans, Christopher Henry Miller turned his pastry chef experience into the Miller Candy Company. His son-in-law, Augustus Elmer, eventually joined him. In 1914, Elmer’s sons signed on to what is now known as Elmer Candy Corporation. In the 1960s, Roy Nelson purchased the confectionary business from the Elmer family and moved operations to Ponchatoula, where they refocused their efforts and concentrated on seasonal ladies instead of everyday candies and snacks. Today, the third-generation of the Nelson family runs this company, which is the second-largest heart box manufacture in the U.S. In fact, Elmer produces nearly 46 million assorted Valentine boxes which are sold throughout North America, Central America, and New Zealand. They are also the largest private employer in Ponchatoula, providing 400 jobs in our community. Today we join them in celebrating the 100th anniversary of their Easter candy, Heavenly Hash! Congratulations, Elmer Chocolate!
