How to Boil Water
When a boil water advisory is called for, Tangipahoa Parish recommends that all consumers disinfect their water before consuming it, making ice, brushing teeth, or using it for food preparation or rinsing of foods by doing the following:
- Fill a pot with water.
- Put the pot on stove burner at HIGH or MAX heat.
- Wait until water comes to a full rolling boil. You will know if it’s rolling if the bubbles cannot be stopped by stirring the water with a spoon.
- Set a timer for 1 minute, letting the water boil for the duration.
- After 1 minute, turn off the stove, remove the pot from heat, and allow the water to fully cool.
- Store the cooled-off water in an airtight container(s).
- Use this water to drink, rinse, brush, etc. Occasionally, boiled water may have a flat taste. To eliminate this, you can shake the water in a clean bottle, pour it into another clean container, or add a small pinch of salt to each quart of water as it boils.
