Hon. Louis Nick Joseph

Louis “Nick” Joseph is the son of the late Curtis and Albertha Joseph of Sunshine, LA (now St. Gabriel). Upon graduating from high school in 1964, he enlisted into the U.S. Army and did a tour of duty in Vietnam. Upon his discharge from the regular army, he joined the Louisiana Army National Guard and retired after 34 years of service, holding the rank of Chief Warrant Officer – 5. He graduated from Southern University in 1972 with a B.S. degree and from Southeastern Louisiana University with his Master’s degree and Master’s+30 hours.  In 2019 he was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters from Southern University for his service to his community and veterans affairs.

He began his teaching career in 1972 at Westside Middle School in Amite. He spent 32 years in the public school system where he served as teacher, principal, supervisor, assistant superintendent, and superintendent.

He served on the Independence Board of Aldermen for 24 years and currently serves on the Tangipahoa Parish Council representing District 3. He is a member of the Mount Olive Baptist Church where he serves as chairman of the trustee board. He is a lifetime member of Southern University and Southeastern Louisiana University alumni associations.

He is married to the former Rosemary Owens of Independence. They have three sons, Torrence, Lionel and Ryan, a daughter, Karen, and nine grandchildren – Danielle, Maya, Devin, Jillian, Nylah, Honor, Benjamin, Lion and Jeramie.
