Here is an update concerning the severe weather/heavy rainfall threat this upcoming weekend & brief update with the ongoing risk of minor coastal flooding:

Overview:

WHAT:

  • SLIGHT to ENHANCED RISK of Severe Weather.
  • SLIGHT RISK of Excessive Rainfall.

WHEN: Saturday Night into Sunday Morning.

WHERE: All of SE LA and Southern MS, with the greater risk/threat for northwestern areas including the Atchafalaya basin – where significant severe weather could be expected.

CONFIDENCE: Confidence in the timing and coverage of the threat remains LOW to MEDIUM. More specific details will be provided in future updates.

Impacts: The main threats associated with any severe storms will be:

  • Wind gusts greater than 70 mph that will cause minor structural damage and cause widespread tree and powerline damage.
  • Large hail 1″ in diameter or larger.
  • A few tornadoes will be expected.
  • Locally heavy rainfall and excessive rain rates can be expected in these storms.
    • Average area rainfall totals of 0.5 to 2″ can be expected (with isolated higher amounts). Increasing confidence in higher-end totals for central/eastern areas but will continue to be monitored.

Coastal Flood Advisory:

A Coastal Flood Advisory is now in effect for all coastal areas through Saturday afternoon. Persistent strong onshore winds will keep tides elevated over the next several days, leading to the daily risk for minor coastal flooding.
