Severe Weather and Flooding Rain Update: April 5, 2025

Here is an update concerning the severe weather threat tonight into tomorrow morning:

Overview:

WHAT:  SLIGHT RISK to ENHANCED RISK of Severe Weather. SLIGHT RISK of Flooding Rains.

WHEN:  Tonight into tomorrow morning.

WHERE:  All of southeast LA and southern MS.

CONFIDENCE: Confidence in the timing and coverage of the threat has increased to HIGH.  Most likely timing for severe thunderstorms to begin impacting the areas is around Midnight for western areas.  The line will then gradually progress to the east across the entire area through the morning hours on Sunday.   Confidence has increased to MEDIUM that the line will begin to slow as it advances east across the area late tonight into tomorrow morning.   The severe storm threat with damaging winds and a few tornadoes will be greatest for areas north of I-10 and west of I-55, including Baton Rouge, tonight, but the flooding rain threat has increased for areas east of I-55 including the Northshore, New Orleans, and the MS Coast from 4 a.m. through noon as the line slows down.

Impacts:

The main threats associated with any severe storms will be:

Damaging winds:

  • Wind gusts greater than 60 mph.
  • Winds of this magnitude are capable of causing damage to trees and power lines, leading to isolated/scattered power outages

Large Hail:

  • Large hail of up to 1.5 inches in diameter.
  • Hail of this size is capable of causing damage to crops and causing injury to people and animals.

Tornadoes:

  • A few tornadoes.

Rainfall

  • In addition to the severe weather threat, rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is forecast. There is a medium chance of local amounts 3 inches or more.
  • Runoff will lead to ponding of water and street flooding in low lying areas and areas of poor drainage.
