Parish Braces For Arctic Air Mass Bringing Rain, Cold Temperatures For Holiday Week

Good Morning Tangi,

Here is a rundown on the weather from this morning through the holiday weekend.

Rain today through tomorrow
!!! COLD beginning Thursday night and maxing out Saturday morning !!!

As I type this, rain is moving toward us from the west. It will move across our forecast area from about 6 a.m. today through 6 p.m. Tuesday evening. This is a widespread rain pattern with generally 1.5″ – 2″ of rain along the southern MS counties and the coastal LA parishes decreasing to 1″ – 1.5″ along the center of our area. Note that some embedded thunderstorms will generate some thunder and may result in localized rainfall amounts higher than previously noted. Because of the 36 hour timeframe, flash flooding shouldn’t be an issue; but with the wet ground we have, local rivers may see some noticeable rises.

Moving forward in the week to Thursday, we are continuing to look at cold temperatures moving into the area. This is the Arctic air mass that we’ve been advertising for several days. I want to stress the extreme low temperatures we are expecting (and we will continue messaging through the weekend). At this time, we are expecting the lowest of the lows to occur Friday night.

Additionally, we are expecting enough wind to make a significant wind chill.

Finally, to give you an idea of a realistic/reasonable worst case scenario… the models are currently hinting at the possibility of lows in the single digits to low teens! This is not the likely occurrence, but is certainly something that should be planned for.

This system looks to be on par with conditions that occurred with the February 1996 Arctic airmass. As the week progresses, we will refine our forecast numbers and timing. But again, we are already confident it is going to get bitterly cold. Of course, with these temperatures it will be absolutely necessary to take precautions to protect anyone or anything out of doors and exposed to these conditions.

The NWS will be updating our forecasts through the week and will provide any special updates as needed. Tangipahoa Parish Emergency Operations will keep you updated as soon as we receive information from the NWS.
