Here is an update concerning winter weather threats today and tonight. A frontal system is passing through the area today that will bring high winds and gusts today and low temperatures and wind chills overnight:
WHAT:
- Wind Advisory
- Cold Weather Advisory
WHEN:
- Wind Advisory now through 3 p.m.
- Cold Weather Advisory starting at midnight tonight and running through 9 a.m. Tuesday
WHERE:
- Wind Advisory includes Louisiana areas along and south of the I-10/12 corridor, as well as Pointe Coupee and West Baton Rouge Parishes.
- Cold Weather Advisory includes Louisiana parishes and Mississippi counties along and north of the I-10/12 corridor.
CONFIDENCE:
- We are confident that winds associated with the passing frontal system will be blowing out of the north at 15-25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph
- We are confident that temperatures will fall to low levels in the mid to upper 20s. When combined with winds, this will generate Apparent Temperatures (“feels like”) in the upper 10s to low 20s.
Impacts:
- High Winds: High and gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects, e.g. Christmas decorations. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.
- Low Temperatures: Temperatures will fall as low as the upper 20s and will be below freezing for up to 6 hours in the southwest Mississippi Counties (shorter time into other areas of the advisory). These temperatures could cause hypothermia for those without warm shelter, harm pets and tender vegetation, and possibly lead to frozen pipes. Protect People, Pets, Plants, and Pipes!
- Wind Chill: These wind chill values can easily lead to hypothermia. Check on family, friends, and neighbors.
