Here is an update concerning the heavy rain and severe weather threat this evening and into the overnight hours:
Changes from previous update: The area of greatest heavy rainfall threat has expanded to include the southshore
WHAT: Slight Risk of Heavy Rain that could lead to flash flooding & a Marginal Risk for Severe Weather
WHEN: This evening and overnight
WHERE: All of SE LA and S MS, especially along and north of I-10 for Heavy Rainfall & south of I-10 for Severe Weather
CONFIDENCE:
- We are confident that there will be thunderstorms across the area and that a few will produce heavy rainfall. We are less confident in exactly where the greatest threat will be.
- We are confident there will be thunderstorms, but we have little confidence on how far inland the severe storms will get.
Impacts:
- Heavy Rainfall: Rainfall of 1 to 3 inches is currently forecast. There is a low chance of local amounts of 5 inches or more. High rainfall rates will quickly lead to runoff with ponding of water in low lying areas and localized flash flooding. As water drains into area rivers, there will be a threat of minor flooding along some rivers
- Damaging Winds: Wind gusts greater than 60 mph are possible. Winds of this magnitude are capable of causing damage to trees and power lines, leading to isolated/scattered power outages
- Large Hail: Large hail of up to 1 inches in diameter will be possible.
- Tornadoes: A few tornadoes are possible.
