Here is an update concerning the winter weather threat this weekend:
Changes from previous update:
- A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Southwest MS and portions of Southeast LA valid 12 a.m. until 6 p.m. Sunday.
- No significant changes to forecast thinking in this update.
- A full update will be provided with the winter weather briefing at 2 p.m. today.
Overview:
- We are continuing to closely monitor impacts associated with an approaching winter storm impacting the southern/eastern US this weekend.
- The highest probabilities for freezing rain & associated ice accumulation will be north of a Baton Rouge to Bogalusa line with the greatest threat in Southwest Mississippi and portions of Louisiana north of New Roads to Kentwood line.
- Areas within the watch could see ice accumulations up to one tenth of an inch (0.1″) with localized higher amounts up to one quarter of an inch (0.25″) in parts of Southwest MS counties as well as Pointe Coupee and West/East Feliciana.
- Higher likelihood of all-rain for southern/coastal areas – but will closely monitor.
- Time frame: Saturday thru Sunday evening, could linger into Monday but the system will depart quickly as we enter the new week.
- Beyond the threat of ice accumulations, extreme cold temperatures (hard freeze) and dangerous wind chills in the teens are expected across the area Sunday through Tuesday mornings.
