Isolated Severe Weather and Heavy Rain Threat for Saturday, Dec. 9

Here is an update concerning the severe weather threat for the night of Saturday, Dec. 9:

WHAT: Marginal to Slight Risk of Severe Weather; Marginal Risk of Locally Heavy Rainfall
WHEN: While a few thunderstorms cannot be ruled out during the afternoon hours, the main threat timing will be during the overnight and early morning hours associated with a squall line.
WHERE: All of southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi, with the greatest threat across southwestern Mississippi.
CONFIDENCE: We are confident there will be thunderstorms across the area. We have little confidence any of them will become severe or produce heavy rainfall since the squall line should be weakening as it moves through the local area.
Impacts:
  • Damaging wind gusts greater than 60 mph will be the main threat from any severe thunderstorms. These winds could damage trees, power lines, and weaker structures.
  • Large hail and a brief tornado or two cannot be ruled out.
  • Rainfall is generally forecast to be less than one inch. However, a few locations could see higher amounts leading to ponding of water in low-lying areas and areas of poor drainage.
