Heavy Rain and Tropical Update: July 17, 2025

Here is an update concerning the heavy rain threat through Saturday in association with a tropical disturbance moving through southern Louisiana.

Changes from previous update:

  • The chance of tropical cyclone development is rapidly decreasing
  • The heavy rain threat beyond today has generally decreased

Overview: There is a low (10%) chance of tropical cyclone development and that probability continues to decrease. A Flood Watch remains in effect for portions of southern Louisiana.

Heavy Rain and Flooding Impacts:

  • The current forecast calls for an additional 1-3″ across much of southeastern Louisina and southern Mississippi through Saturday, with the highest amounts generally across areas near the Atchafalaya River. Higher amounts are likely, and localized storm totals of 10″ or more (including rain that has already fallen) are still possible, mainly in coastal areas.
  • Localized flash flooding will continue to be a threat as some storms will be capable of producing high rainfall rates in excess of 2″ per hour.
  • Ponding of water in low lying and poor drainage areas is likely, with some road closures still possible. Urban areas will be particularly vulnerable as high rainfall rates can easily overwhelm local drainage capacity.
