Dr. Nick J. Bruno

2015 Wall of Fame Honoree

It has been said that a true leader, leads by example with hard work, determination and vision. Nothing could be truer when referring to Dr. Nick J. Bruno. Dr. Bruno was born in Tangipahoa Parish. He was raised in Independence, Louisiana and considers it home. His upbringing in the rural area of Tangipahoa Parish afforded Dr. Bruno with the appreciation of the outdoors, love of nature and clear understanding of the importance of agriculture. The keen awareness of agriculture and his expertise in business made his role instrumental in planting the seed and carrying the torch as an advocate of the Florida Parishes Arena and vital to its very existence.

One of the charter members of the steering committee that was instrumental in the creation and development of the Florida Parishes Arena, stated that “Dr. Bruno was a “key player” in getting the arena built.” He went on to say, “Nick is hardworking and aggressive and wanted to see something good for Tangipahoa Parish”. Dr. Bruno’s role as a facilitator for the Arena project took place while he was working at Southeastern Louisiana University, under the presidency of Dr. Sally Clausen. His vast experience with public facilities, governmental relations and personal interest, made Dr. Bruno perfect for this role.

Dr. Bruno became the eighth president of the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 2010, and now has more than 35 years of work in Louisiana higher education. Dr. Bruno earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and an MBA from Southeastern Louisiana University. He earned a Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership from the University of Mississippi. Throughout his tenure in higher education he has served in various roles at different campuses and with the University of Louisiana System.

Dr. Bruno has varied personal interest, including at a time being in the beef cattle business, giving back to his community via public service and as a volunteer on countless boards and organizations. He is a family man and is married to his wife Linda.

Dr. Bruno’s selection to be on the Wall of Fame serves as a testament that hard work and dedication can make great things happen. The Florida Parishes Arena is just one example of the legacy that Dr. Nick J. Bruno has left a mark on during his service to the public and Tangipahoa Parish.
