Build An Emergency Kit
In an emergency, your household must have enough food, water, and other supplies to last several days. To ensure you have all you need, create an emergency kit by placing the necessary items in airtight bags and storing them in a plastic bin.
Start With Basic Supplies
- One gallon of water per day for each person in your household
- Non-perishable food that will last your household three days or more
- Manual can opener
- Paper plates and plastic utensils
- Hand-crank or battery-powered radio
- NOAA weather radio
- Flashlights
- Extra batteries for all devices
- Whistle
- Matches in a waterproof case
- Dust mask to protect from air contamination
- Trash bags and moist towelettes for personal sanitation
- Cellphone, chargers, and backup battery
- Pliers and wrench to turn off utilities
- First aid kit fully stocked
- Space blankets
Personalize Your Kit
Depending on your individual needs, you might also want to include:
- Prescription medications
- Masks, disinfecting wipes, and hand sanitizer
- Extra set of eyeglasses
- Contact lens solution and cases
- Infant care items
- Food and water for your pets
- Copies of your important documents
- Feminine supplies
- Cards, books, and games
- Change of clothes and shoes
- Fire extinguisher
- Cash
