Severe Weather, Strong Wind Threat for Mardi Gras 2025

Here is an update concerning the severe weather and gusty wind threat Tuesday (Mardi Gras Day).

Changes from previous update:

  • We are much more confident of the timing of the severe weather

Overview:

WHAT:  SLIGHT to ENHANCED RISK of Severe Weather and Wind Gusts 40-45mph outside of thunderstorms w/ peaks around 55-60mph.

WHEN: 

  • Wind – Morning thru late evening for winds 
  • Severe – Tuesday, noon to midnight.  

 

WHERE: All of SE LA and S MS

CONFIDENCE: 

  • Severe Weather – Timing and location have come into agreement impacts starting on the west boundary of the area about noon and progressing through midnight on the far east side of the area.
  • Gradient Wind – Confidence remains high in gusty winds over 40mph and up to 60mph regardless of storm development.

 

Impacts:

The main threats associated with any severe storms will be:

Damaging Winds:

  • Wind gusts greater than 60 mph are possible.
  • Winds of this magnitude are capable of causing damage to trees and power lines, leading to isolated/scattered power outages

Tornadoes:

  • A few tornadoes are possible.

The main threats associated with the gusty background winds will be:

 

  • Loose items could get blown away in the wind
  • High-profile vehicles will have dangerous crosswinds
