Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa is excited to announce the upcoming “Night Out Against Crime,” an event that fosters a sense of unity, safety, and prevention among residents. This event will be held on October 23rd in the 100 block of North Cypress Street in downtown Hammond, starting at 5 p.m.
This event is conjunction with Hammond’s Downtown Development District’s Trick or Treat event. Families, neighbors, and community members are invited to participate in this special night dedicated to strengthening community-police partnerships and raising awareness about crime prevention.
The Night Out Against Crime event will feature a variety of activities and resources aimed at educating families on safety and security. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet local law enforcement officers, engage in fun activities for children, and learn valuable crime prevention tips. Interactive booths and displays will offer insight into how individuals can keep their homes and neighborhoods safe from crime. McGruff will be making a special guest appearance. Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office will provide children’s ID Kits, Southeastern University Police Department will be coloring with kids and will have a photo booth available and many more activities for a fun night.
In addition to celebrating Night Out Against Crime, TRACC (Tangipahoa Reshaping Attitudes for Community Change) will officially kick-off “Red Ribbon Week,” the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention awareness campaign. Red Ribbon has symbolized a continuing commitment to reducing the demand for illicit drugs in our communities. Red Ribbon Week gives us the opportunity to be vocal and visible in our efforts to achieve a drug-free community for Tangipahoa Parish.
The TRACC Coalition is asking our community partners to take a visible stand against drugs in recognition of National Red Ribbon Week. TRACC is encouraging our business owners, civic leaders, and other community organizations to promote healthy attitudes that support drug-free lifestyles. Research shows that children are less likely to use alcohol and other drugs when parents and other adult role models are clear and consistent in their opposition to drug use and the misuse of prescription drugs. Red Ribbon Week is celebrated every year from October 23rd – 31st.
Taylor Addison, Community Development & Coalition Coordinator, states, “Red Ribbon Week is our chance to stand up for a drug free community. I champion being a role model for our younger generation to live a healthy and drug free lifestyle. Although red ribbon week is celebrated once a year, I encourage everyone to live this way every day. Come join us in kicking off Red Ribbon Week on the 23rd.”
The event will offer special activities for children and parents, including:
- Interactive safety workshops
- Drug prevention education sessions
- Arts and crafts booths promoting Red Ribbon Week themes
- Meet-and-greet with police officers and K-9 units
- Opportunities to pledge to live drug-free
The event is free and open to the public.
