Overview:
WHAT: SLIGHT RISK to ENHANCED RISK of Severe Weather; SLIGHT RISK of Heavy Rain/Flash Flooding
WHEN: The main storm complex and greatest threat will progress from west to east between 6 p.m. and 1 a.m. However, isolated to widely scattered storms are still possible well ahead of the main complex through the remainder of this afternoon.
WHERE: For the severe weather, the whole area has some threat with the greatest threat mainly along and south of the I-10/12 corridor. For the heavy rain, mainly south of a line from Donaldsonville to Slidell to Saucier, including the south shore and MS Coast
CONFIDENCE: There is still some uncertainty in the exact location and timing of greatest threat, but overall confidence has improved, with near-average confidence in the forecast now.
Impact:
The main threats associated with any severe storms will be:
- Wind gusts greater than 60 mph, with some potential for wind gusts in excess of 75 mph. These winds could damage trees and power lines, leading to isolated or scattered power outages.
- Hail larger than 1″ in diameter (quarter size)
- A few tornadoes cannot be ruled out
- Additional rainfall of 1 to 3 inches is forecast with locally higher amounts possible and could lead to ponding of water in low lying areas
and areas of poor drainage, especially in urban areas where high rain rates can quickly overwhelm short-term drainage capacity.
