Fred McCarter Jr.

Fred was born on December 2, 1942 in Independence. He has lived and worked in Tangipahoa Parish his entire life. His love for horses and livestock was fostered at an early age by his grandfather, Rev. James Vernon, Sr. of Roseland. He was an active participant of 4-H at Westside High School. He went on to obtain a degree in Agricultural Sciences from Southern University.

He returned to Tangipahoa Parish and taught school for 25 years at schools including O.W. Dillon, Spring Creek, and Loranger High. During that time, Fred was introduced to rodeoing by the late Mr. Jim Dyer, a lifelong mentor, and Jack Corona, Sr., a life long friend. Fred attributes his professional cowboy development to the late Calvin Greeley of Texas. Over the years, Fred has competed in calf roping, team roping and bull dogging with the Tri-State Rodeo Association and the PRCA.

Fred has always been a huge advocate of helping others to refine their rodeo skills. He worked at Bear Creek Western Stores for many years and after he retired from teaching school he designed and developed tack for Adams Western Equipment of Cookevile, TN. He has served as mentor to many young cowboys over the decades including his son, Fred McCarter, III.
