PONCHATOULA—Barricades have been removed and traffic is once again moving across a new bridge on Sisters Road east of Ponchatoula as of Thursday afternoon.

Tangipahoa Parish President Robby Miller said the bridge opened a week ahead of schedule.

Closed in early March, the project addressed several safety issues on the heavily-traveled parish roadway.  The parish acquired right-of-way to remove a dangerous curve in the middle of the bridge.   Crews were then tasked with re-developing the narrow bridge into a straightaway, which was widened across two full lane spans.

“The finished product is a drastically safer route that is built to accommodate passenger vehicles as well as fire trucks, school buses, and other commercial traffic traveling in this area,” Miller said.

Miller reminds drivers that the speed limit is still 25 mph in that area.

“I know our residents and motorists in that area will be happy to have the bridge open again,” Miller said, offering a special thanks to the crews who completed the job ahead of schedule.
