Hair for All
Men between 18 and 75 are asked to purchase a permit if they do NOT want to participate (grow a beard). Purchase price will be $5, payable at the Amite Chamber of Commerce office. During the two-month period, local policemen will locate, warn, fine and even possibly arrest those who do not have their permit. Then the fine will be $10, or jail time with a $20 bond. When bond or warrant is paid, men will be given a permit good for the entire time.
The conclusion of this hairy situation will be September 21 when the 150th Anniversary Celebration will end at the Florida Parishes Arena in Amite with special events and even fireworks. Sometime during that day there will be a best beard contest, best mustache contest, best goatee contest, best overall, followed by voluntary shave-offs with the help of barber Bob Irwin of The Tangi Talk Barber Shop. The contest is not limited to Amite beards, as men from the entire Tangipahoa Parish area are invited to come participate for the prizes. Judges' names will remain secret until the day of the contest.
