Amite Historic Parade of Homes and Places
Don’t Miss Historic Tour of Amite July 7th
Did you know Amite was almost named “Fillmore?” Did you know The Boston Restaurant was open in the same location 100 years ago? Did you know the first U.S.Post Office in Amite was actually in a drug store? Did you realize that Tangipahoa Parish, beginning in 1869 has had five courthouses? And have you heard about the deadly cyclone that ripped through town in 1908?
Neither did I, until I began work on a historic tour of homes and buildings in the city limits of Amite. The Town of Amite, Louisiana was chartered on March 7, 1861 actually as part of St. Helena parish, but changed to Tangipahoa when the parish was incorporated March 6, 1869. Mayor Buddy Bel says that’s our claim to the oldest city honor.
As part of the celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Tangipahoa, there will be an afternoon bus tour featuring over 25 of Amite’s ancestral homes and locations, including the first school, post office, hotels, and government buildings. Tickets will be sold for the narrated bus ride which will be approximately two hours, featuring one stop.
The tour of Amite is scheduled for this Sunday, July 7th departing from the chamber office:
Due to popular demand, an additional group has been added. These are small buses, and there will be one stop during the tour which includes 35 locations, all within the city limits of Amite. Interaction and conversation is invited among attendees.
BUSES are almost completely filled, please call Carol at 748-5537 to reserve one of the last spots! Don't Miss This!
The tour is a practice run for the official ride planned for the 150th birthday celebration September 21st when crowds are expected in Amite, and hopefully will want to see our city.
I want to make sure that we don’t leave out something that needs to be told. If I have enough pre-ride interest for discussion, we may meet at the chamber one afternoon or night in the next few weeks for a friendly chat on Past & Present things we might want to know. If you have information about Amite you would like to share with me, but can’t attend, feel free to contact me: firstname.lastname@example.org. . We want this trip to be a friendly couple of hours sharing things you know or remember that your grandmother told ya about living in our fair city.
